As the Entertainment ID Registry (EIDR) marks its 15th anniversary, we are taking a deep dive into the quality and integrity of the data in our registry. Our mission has always been to provide a universal, reliable, and interoperable identifier system for audiovisual content, and that starts with ensuring that the data behind those identifiers is both accurate and complete.
A changing landscape requires a fresh look
EIDR was originally designed with physical content distribution in mind, but the industry has evolved significantly since then. Digital distribution, streaming platforms, and new forms of content creation demand a registry that reflects today’s realities. With that in mind, EIDR has tasked its Data Governance Committee with reviewing and enhancing data quality best practices to meet the needs of an ever-changing digital supply chain.
“The idea is that the EIDR board wants to examine deeply what we’re tracking, and is it still relevant to today’s digital supply chain?” said Hollie Choi, Managing Director of EIDR. “We’re lifting the lid to see what’s going on under the hood.”
That means re-evaluating everything from metadata consistency and terminology to how supply chain information is structured. The usability and structure of the registry itself are also under review, ensuring that contributors and users can work with it more efficiently.
Strengthening collaboration with contributors
While EIDR is conducting a thorough internal review, we recognize that improving data quality is a collective effort. Contributors play a crucial role in keeping registry records current as new metadata becomes available. That’s why we are enhancing best practices and actively engaging with the EIDR community to encourage participation in the conversation.
We’re reaching out to members and industry stakeholders to gather insights, address known data issues, and ensure the registry remains a valuable resource for everyone. If you have feedback, suggestions, or concerns, now is the time to share them. Your input will help shape the future of EIDR and improve the accuracy of the data that powers the entertainment industry.
Get involved
The impact of these efforts on users should be minimal, but the benefits will be significant: a more reliable, comprehensive, and user-friendly registry. Whether you’re an EIDR contributor, a data user, or an industry stakeholder, we encourage you to join the discussion.
If you have ideas for improving EIDR’s data quality or if you’d like to be part of the ongoing conversation, reach out to Hollie Choi at [email protected]. Together, we can ensure that EIDR remains the gold standard for entertainment content identification for years to come.
