October is full of important events in German history and culture, including:
- Martin Luther nails his 95 theses to the doors of the Hofkirche at Wittenberg in 1517.
- The annual Oktoberfest[1] held in Munich since 1811.[2]
- The birth of Friedrich “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.” Nietzche in 1844.
- The death of Felix Salten (née Siegmund Salzmann), the author of Bambi, in 1945.
- The post-Cold War reunification of East[3] and West Germany on October 3, 1990, now celebrated as Tag der Deutschen Einheit (German Unity Day).
To honor this momentous month, we take a look at the best and most influential works of German cinema,[4] from the early days of motion studies to the present. To compile this list, we consulted a variety of sources:
- IMDb’s list of “Top 200 German Films” for the popular vote
- Taste of Cinema’s “30 Essential German Films You Need To Watch”
- The Local’s “10 epic German movies you have to watch before you die”
- BFI’s “10 great German films of the 21st century”
- de’s “Ten German films that you should know”
To this we added our own list of “Significant achievement in German cinema that don’t get the attention they deserve today for one reason or another” that were missing from the other lists.
German cinema dates back to November 1, 1895 with the first paid theatrical presentation in Europe and the establishment of Babelsberg Studio, the world’s first large-scale film studio, in 1921. This led to “The Golden Age of German Cinema,” which spanned the inter-war years from 1920-1933 and included the heyday of German Expressionism. Berlinale (the Berlin International Film Festival) was established in 1951 and is now one of the world’s leading film festivals and awards programs. Neue Deutsche Welle (New German Cinema) from 1962–1982 paralleled the French New Wave with young directors working with low budgets, launching the careers of such notables as Werner Herzog and Wim Wenders. German reunification in 1990 led to “Modern German Cinema.” As with many national film industries, German productions struggle against the Hollywood entertainment juggernaut and its draw on German talents to English-language cinema, including Roland Emmerich, Wolfgang Petersen, and Hans Zimmer.
We’re doing our small part to help promote German-language cinema with this list of the best/most influential German movies, presented here for your consideration.

[1] Fun Fact: While it’s called “Oktoberfest,” it actually starts in September and ends on the 1st Sunday in October.
[2] Oktoberfest began as the annual celebration of the marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe‑Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810.
[3] Fun Fact: Any country with “democratic” in its name — German Democratic Republic, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Democratic Republic of the Congo — probably isn’t.
[4] Technically, German-language cinema, since we include a variety of German-language works originating the various incarnations of Germany as well as neighboring European countries, including Austria and Switzerland.
