Jacking In: Cyberpunk Cinema

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures[1] (AMMP) is currently running[2] a special exhibition that examines a cinematic genre that had its roots in the 1980s, the era of New Wave music on the radio[3] and rather interesting hair styles in high school yearbooks: Cyberpunk: Envisioning Possible Futures through Cinema. The exhibit “examines the global impact and lasting influence of the science fiction subgenre cyberpunk on cinema culture.”

Before cyberpunk cinema there was cyberpunk literature. The literary subgenre originated in the science fiction New Wave movement of the 1960s and 1970s, first coalescing in the pages of the British magazine New Worlds under the editorial direction of science fiction/fantasy author Michael Moorcock. Author Bruce Bethke coined the genre’s name in the title of his 1980 short story “Cyberpunk,” but it was Gardner Dozois, editor of Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine, who applied the name to the genre.[4]

A common theme in cyberpunk stories, often set in a near-future, dystopian Earth, is society’s reaction to the repeated upheavals of advancing technology. Author Lawrence Person summarized cyberpunk by noting that:

Classic cyberpunk characters were marginalized, alienated loners who lived on the edge of society in generally dystopic futures where daily life was impacted by rapid technological change, an ubiquitous datasphere of computerized information, and invasive modification of the human body.[5]

It took some time for individual literary efforts exploring similar themes to coalesce into a recognizable subgenre of science fiction. One can trace a direct line from Samuel R. Delany’s early proto-cyberpunk novel Nova (1968) to William Gibson’s novel Neuromancer (1984), perhaps the most famous cyberpunk novel.[6],[7] Blade Runner (1982),[8] which brought cyberpunk to the attention of cinema audiences and set the dominant visual tone for science fiction movies for the next fifteen years,[9] was inspired by (more than based on) Philip K. Dick’s novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968).

The 1980s produced a number of influential cyberpunk movies, including Akira (1988), Blade Runner, Brazil (1985), Escape from New York (1981), Repo Man (1984), RoboCop (1987), The Running Man (1987), The Terminator (1984), Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989), TRON (1982), and Videodrome (1983),[10] but it is not just an artifact of the 1980s. According to Jared Shurin, editor of The Big Book of Cyberpunk:[11]

Blade Runner defined cyberpunk and it stayed like that until [T]he Matrix [1999], when suddenly there was a millennial cyberpunk asking questions like what does it mean to be human, and that took the art of film-making another huge leap forward.

Peak years for cyberpunk productions came in the late 1990s (with 23 new releases in 1998/1999) and the early 2000s (peaking in 2003 with 13). There have been another 12 so far in the 2020s.

Nor is cyberpunk a uniquely American phenomenon. When discussing the museum exhibit, Doris Berger, AMMP’s vice president of curatorial affairs, noted that cyberpunk cinema is “not unique to America, there are many reasons to think about our futures, and cyberpunk has been adapted all around the world, from Europe to Africa to Asia.”[12] In fact, the 231 movies and series in our cyberpunk roster come from more than 30 different countries.

Japanese cyberpunk is particularly prolific, appearing in live action movies, anime, and manga. In Japan, cyberpunk grew out of the local punk music culture more so than New Wave science fiction. While it shows many similarities to the “low-life high-tech” cyberpunk of the West, it is more an example of parallel evolution, with its first examples appearing in 1982: the manga Akira (and subsequent 1988 anime movie) and live action Burst City. The defining live action film of the subgenre is perhaps Tetsuo: The Iron Man, though manga and anime series continue to dominate the Japanese cyberpunk market.

If you’re a fan of cyberpunk, or just being introduced to it, and you can’t attend the AMMP exhibit during its run in Los Angeles, you can still immerse yourself in cyberpunk cinema and draw your own conclusions regarding its past influences and ongoing influence. All of the movies and TV shows featured in Wikipedia’s list of cyberpunk works are available in the EIDR Content ID registry, where you will also find links to other sources for more information and a streaming service near you.

[3] Or, as I like to think of it, “radio-friendly punk rock.”

[4] In a 1984 Washington Post article, Dozois actually referred to the leading authors in the subgenre as “cyberpunks,” but the name stuck more firmly to the genre than the people.

[5] In his article “Notes Toward a Postcyberpunk Manifesto” in the magazine Nova Express.

[6] The novel was so influential that Bruce Bethke (who had already coined “cyberpunk”) suggested the genre be called “Neuromantics.”

[7] Two years earlier, Gibson coined the term “cyberspace” in his short story “Burning Chrome” (1982). The term “jacking in” (in this article’s title) was first used in this context by Robert Silverberg in his short story “The Tower of Glass” (1970).

[8] Technically, Blade Runner was pre-dated in cyberpunk cinema by Escape from New York (1981). Neither did particularly well at the box office, but both have gained cult followings since and have both inspired sequels: Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and Escape from L.A. (1996).

[9] Until The Fifth Element (1997) presented a much brighter and more colorful, if still dystopian, vision of the cyberpunk future.

[10] There were four proto-cyberpunk precursors: The American movies Westworld (1973) and Futureworld(1976); the German TV series Welt am Draht (World on a Wire, 1973); and The Deadly Assassin storyline in Britian’s Dr. Who.
