EIDR Welcomes Sveriges Television AB

The Entertainment ID Registry (EIDR) is welcoming its latest member from Sweden, national public television broadcaster and news site Sveriges Television AB (SVT), which is funded by a public service tax on personal income in the country.

Founded in 1950 as part of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), SVT serves as a counterpart to the UK’s BBC. Together with public broadcasters Sveriges Radio and Sveriges Utbildningsradio, SVT is owned by an independent foundation with a board that consists of 13 politicians appointed by the Swedish government. SVT’s regulatory framework is governed by Swedish law and is barred from accepting advertisements, with the exception of sponsors for sporting events.

Up until 1987, SVT was the only Swedish television available to the public. It remains the biggest TV network in Sweden.

The addition of SVT to EIDR’s membership marks EIDR’s latest expansion overseas, with the recent additions of BBC Studios, Korea’s CJ ENM, and Mexico’s Univision.
